Notes for Lucas

Lucas, there was never a shortage of thinking swirling around you and your conversations. As you go to the working world, don’t lose your torrent of questions and don’t stop mulling things over. And please let me know when you find answers.

Lucas, what a privilege to be a fly on the wall of your life and watch you grow in wisdom and stature. I pray you will continue to seek God’s best and have a blast along the way!

Lucas! Congratulations, my friend! From our one-on-ones when you served as Helmsmen to our talks about running and working out I have truly enjoyed your friendship these past three years. May God bless you in your next chapter.

Lucas, I’ll miss your intellectual curiosity and scope of knowledge, coupled with your humble and fun-loving spirit on all our many debate adventures. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

Lucas! Thanks for your help on QR that one day truly it was needed, and thanks for always cracking jokes from the back row in debate. Congrats!!!

Thanks for being such a great debate partner and buddy. I’m gonna miss you. Lmk if u ever wanna randomly do a tournament as adults.

Ps thanks for this pic

Mr. Kierkegaard; may I call you Lucas?

I don’t know which memory stands out the most: sitting with you in a bar in Toronto as the panicked Debate Team blew up our phones and the Yankees lost the playoffs to the Houston Astros, or sitting with you in a bar in Brooklyn or the FiDi discussing our rocky life developments, or sitting with you in a cramped communist bar in the East Village realizing that we had walked into the wrong kind of party altogether.

Of course, as much fun as these all were, none of the bars stand out nearly as much as the long car ride home from Canada, when navigator Lucas calmly let me know that the people in the van I was driving were quietly beginning to mutiny (and I was wearing a UoT shirt that was far too small for me), or that time we ran into Michael and Maggie Terry and spent an hour talking about philosophy and city life, or that time we watched a Tarantino film at Lydia’s place and you hilariously and succinctly explained everything that was going wrong for us. You’re a hell of a guy, and I’m grateful that I get to count you among my closest friends.

Keep in touch dude,
Eddie VanZandt

Congrats on graduating, Lucas! I hope that you are healthy and safe during this time and I’m looking forward to seeing where life takes you from here. I hope it is filled with much joy.

You are a great classmate and I always appreciated your views and insight into the issues we discussed. Wishing you the best beyond King’s!

Congratulations Lucas! The way you think and learn is absolutely astounding. Your long rant about chess in International was probably one of my favorite memories of the semester. I wish you the best after King’s!

Lucas, I am so grateful I got to know you, even if it was in the later years. I will miss our talks and hearing about how things are going. I have grown so accustomed to seeing the regular group of students sitting at the FA desks working so hard to meet every deadline. You were always one of those students and it just won’t be the same passing by and not seeing you there anymore. Always take that perseverance with you wherever you go. Blessings to you on this next chapter!

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

Lucas, you are a gifted debater! I was always impressed by your ability to demolish your opponents’ arguments. Thanks for all the laughs during debate practices and for giving great contributions during class. Congrats and may God guide you in your future endeavors.

I congratulate you on earning your PPE degree and on your successes in debating. I was always pleased to see your name on a course roster, because you made valuable contributions in every course you took with me. You have an inquiring mind and always respected your interlocutors, even when you strongly disagreed with them. These virtues, alas, are in short supply today, so we can only hope that you will continue to exhibit them. Please stay in touch. Wishing you an abundance of blessings in the years ahead.
